On Sunday 28th of August the Adrossan Community Development Trust will be having a Family Fun Day on the South Beach Promenade from 12pm – 3pm.
The event will be to celebrate and commemorate the people nominated to have a South Beach Deckchair named after them. The project was carried out over a few months in 2021 following a campaign for worthy nominees. The Trust asked the local community to provide a name for each of the 104 deckchairs by nominating a name they felt was synonymous with the area and telling a story behind it. Plans were to have 100 deckchairs but we had to slip in another 4 given how the community engaged and the amazing feedback received. This will be the first opportunity for everyone to come on down and get a first look at the personalised deckchair.
CORAL MCGOWANWe loved using the deckchairs and took great joy in seeing the wheelchairs being used! We’ll definitely borrow one in the futureAbsolutely fantastic and heard amazing feedback from other beach users alike.Ditto well done N Ayrshire council on keeping the beach area super clean over the past busy few days!!
The Trust worked in partnership with Wave Particle who helped produce the finalised design for the deckchair covers. Drawing inspiration from the Ardrossan Town Coat Of Arms.
The deckchair project will support school children in learning more about our coasts and waters, and their learning will be shared with residents and visitors when they visit South Beach and use the deckchair artworks.
The chairs will contain key ideas and provocations on ideas and actions to help our coasts and waters, including being more resilient to climate change, thereby bringing about positive changes in resident and visitor.
By working with school children and local people in this way, we will have raised questions, focussed ideas and made physical the responses (for example text and powerful aphorisms or great quotes on the deckchairs), that will help develop ways of thinking and sharing as a key skill to complement the variety of ways that help us look after our coasts and waters.
Every deckchair will be on display on the day, with photo opportunities for all nominees to get a picture beside their deckchair. All nominees should have received an email with a letter attached advising them of the event and inviting them to the same. If the nominated person whose name appears on the deckchair can’t attend the event, then a family member or representative can bring along a photograph of the nominee on the day.
In attendance on the day, we will also have retired ex School Teacher, George McGrattan. George is putting together a book of the deckchair project which will contain all the nominated deckchair people’s names, images and biography’s. Plans are to have this added to our website and possibly print some for sale. We’ll keep you posted on this as it progresses.
Also on the day we will have a DJ, Face Painting for the kids (and big kids 😉 a Sports day, Netball, Football, Arts n Crafts. Everyone is welcome to come along and we look forward to seeing you all there on Sunday 28th of August!
